Scenic Route

The children ask to go to Disney
we tell them we cannot do that
but we can go for a drive
and get ice cream today

Sweet cream is dripping from their faces
wind is whipping through our hair
as we take the back roads
and nod to the trees
blushing in shades of gamboge and ginger

Someone asks for a song
from our favorite band
everyone is singing along
laughing at whoever gets the lyrics wrong

And I look behind me
at my children
gangly limbs filling the whole space
beautiful and tender
to all the whispers of the world

We are going nowhere
and everywhere
all at the same time

Blessed are those
who face the cold hard facts
but still put the car into drive
to take in the scenery along the way

WHAT DOES THIS POEM SPEAK TO YOU?
