(Early) Morning Glory

It’s their golden, sun-kissed heads on our (early) morning walks,
when my bleary eyes are barely open to take it in –
the perfect stillness of a summer sunrise
I’d otherwise miss

It’s the light shining into our room, windows open,
the dawning morning breeze
sweeping through this overnight stagnancy

It’s the kids, both at level-3000-summertime-energy,
bounding in and barrelling over our barely-awake bodies
as we roll over to greet them with smiles
and eyes still closed

It’s the tackles and tumbling, squealing and babbling,
their little limbs and big laughs (before the clock even says 7am)

It’s how happy they are to see each other and be with us –
for them, it’s always enough

It’s like he said,
“They might make us tired,
but they are so great.”

The sun is up, and so are they

And so am I

So much more exhausted, but much more awake –

to life.
